This book has been designed to give you, as database developer and end-user, an edge when designing and querying databases using the powerful features that SQL has to offer. What is unusual about this book is that Watcom have provided an actual SQL engine (included on the disk at the back of the book) with which to query the database.
Please return the reply card at the back of the book and tell us what you think. We are always interested in what you have to say and are more than willing to answer your questions on a variety of subjects. We are also open to constructive criticism (although we do prefer unadulterated adoration!)
This book is aimed at programmers and developers who want to add SQL to their collection of language skills. The goal is not to make you an expert, but to give you the skills required to read SQL and to write programs of your own. We aim to take you up to a competent programming level at a pretty fast pace. While there's plenty of theory involved in designing databases, the idea is to give you only a quick outline of the theory needed, so that you can get stuck into the example code from the database at each stage along the way. With this method you don't have to wade through reams of theory before you get to the juicy and practical part.
This book will be a little unusual for an introductory language book in that we are writing in the first person, as if we were coaching you through your first attempt at writing an SQL database. Instead of just dragging you through a series of examples with notes attached to them, we want to give you the flavor and rationale of the SQL language followed by a running example as we introduce each feature.
