Entertainment websites SEO trick?

An SEO (search engine optimization) manta that still seems to be doing the rounds, was to put a keyword in a headline, in bold and in italics. I was asked recently if this is why entertainment websites such as NME and TMZ have stars names in bold font. With everyone trying to get an edge in search engine rankings, could this be a technique that websites use in the highly competitive entertainment business?

Keywords

Lets start with explaining what a keyword is. A keyword is a term that was used as a search in a search engine such as Google or Bing. Some are more popular than others and carefully choosing keywords can help drive organic traffic to your website.

Back around 2004, a very popular SEO technique was to place a keyword in a headline, in bold and in italics all on the same page. You may well still come across pages like this today but search engine algorithms do not stand still. The SEO effect of doing this today is minimal if it has any effect at all.

Bold keywords on entertainment websites

Keywords are bolded on entertainment website for the readers, not the search engines. Visitors to entertainment websites are looking for information on their favorite star and so by bolding the names of stars, it makes it easier for the visitor to pick out the interesting information for them. Many readers will skim through web pages and if they cannot find the information they want, they will abandon the page and often the website.

Web page layout

Careful web page layout is important. Building a page around a keyword is still a good idea and then using bullet points, careful use of headlines and paragraphs and smart use of images can allow the visitor to skim and get the information they want.

Keywords in anchor text

While you always need your keywords in your text, it is essential for SEO to have them in the anchor text of inbound links. While you cannot control how someone else links to your web pages, you can encourage them to use good anchor text by carefully choosing your page title, headlines and summaries. Links with keywords are still king.
