No matter the age of your parents, it is never too late to teach someone the basics of using computers. Many elderly people have come to use email, create Christmas cards and join the Facebook nation all because someone took the time to help them.

Some tips and tricks to teach someone the basics of computer use:
  1. Don’t fill anyone’s head with useless information – Throwing out a bunch of computer terminology like RAM and hard drive might be too much for someone not familiar with computers to handle. On and off is a good place to start.
  2. Ask them what they are interested in – For most seniors, they have a desire to learn the basics and that means internet use and the ability to send and receive email. Help your parents or an elderly person set up an email account and then teach them about password information. (For someone that has trouble remembering things, write everything down.) Take a few moments to introduce the Internet. If you’ve been using it for years, it probably seems like second nature. For an elderly person on the Internet, it’s just a weird thing that is not easy to understand. Ask them something they are interested in, and then show them how to find it by letting them find it. So many people teach by doing it themselves and then expecting another person to replicate the behavior. If someone is elderly, chances are they are going to learn better from a person that is standing over their shoulder while they do their first bit of exploring.
  3. Offer to do maintenance and site computer upkeep for them – If you tell an elderly person to defragment their system, you’re either going to get a blank look or get defragmented yourself.
Most of all have fun with it. If the experience isn’t enjoyable, the elderly might not come back to enjoy the benefits of computer use.
